10 Mountain Bike Trails to Try in Scotland

A great area for mountain biking with some of Scotland’s most well-loved bike trails. These trails were introduced back in 2002 and they’ve proved popular with bikers each year. There’s a variety of trails to follow for all interests and abilities, and some beautiful landscape to explore.

Fort William

Fort William offers a variety of different terrains for beginners and more experienced riders. There is forest or cross country trails as well as an interactive trail finder which can help you to find the best trail for your level.


The Glenlivet Estate offers great mountain bike trails at Cairngorms National Park that offer challenging bike rides as well as great views and scenery. There’s blue and red trails for you to follow, each providing different challenges.

Forest of Ae

Another great area for a mountain bike trail with great picnics to be had along the way, you can also go horse riding too if you fancy a break from the bike. There’s a café here as well as showers and toilets, bike hire and a shop. The opening hours are 10 to 4pm from Monday to Friday and Saturday to Sunday it’s 9:30am to 5:30pm.

Glentress Forest

Great biking experiences with red, green, blue and black trails at different levels of difficulty. There’s great cross country and down-hill trails for you to try as well as small towns to explore.


The beautiful Plantain Loch and forest not far from Dalbeattie is the perfect location for bike ride, it’s a world class bike centre and if you want something really challenging with great wildlife and landscape, then Dalbeattie is the place to go.


A favourite amongst bike riders in general, it’s a bendy twisty trail that will challenge even the most hardened and experienced bike riders.


For experienced and novice riders alike who love a challenge, Newcastleton is a great bike ride. There’s some great scenery to admire and there’s a whole range of trails for riders with different abilities. You can buy a map with all the Stanes trails on and all in all, this is a great way to spend a holiday if you love mountain biking. There’s plenty of parking, shops, information centres and showers, as well great food and accommodation.


A great forest bike ride full of wildlife and beautiful landscapes. It’s a world class bike centre with a picnic area, and somewhere to play for the children. The Mabie House Hotel provides fantastic food and accommodation should you need it.


A purpose built mountain biking trail that is suitable for novices and more experienced bikers. There are coloured routes that are graded from beginner to advanced and there’s plenty of landscape and stunning views to take in along the way.
